Shipley and Saltaire doors
Saltaire became a conservation area in 1971, the properties were listed in the 1980s, and the village was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. The council also holds a long-standing Article 4 direction over it. In practice that means you can't simply swap a Saltaire front door for a modern composite one — replacement doors need listed building consent and have to follow set timber designs.
For a locksmith that's actually good news, because the right answer is almost always to work with the door you already have. A mortice deadlock cut into the door edge, a period-appropriate rim nightlatch, a euro cylinder swapped rather than the whole lockcase ripped out — all of it keeps you secure without touching the character of the building and without needing anyone's permission. And if you're stood outside at eleven at night, picking the lock rather than drilling it is worth every extra minute on a door like that.
Outside the village it's a completely different picture. Windhill, Frizinghall, Wrose and Nab Wood are a mix of stone terraces and post-war estate housing, most of it re-doored in uPVC or composite somewhere between the mid-nineties and the late two-thousands. Here the jobs cluster tightly: multipoint gearboxes on their way out, euro cylinders that have gone gritty, doors that have dropped a few millimetres so the bolts no longer meet the keeps in the frame.
Two things get confused constantly, and it's worth knowing the difference before anyone quotes you. If the door won't lock, that's the mechanism or the alignment. If the key sticks, feels gritty or won't turn smoothly, that's the cylinder — a separate part, and a far cheaper one. Plenty of people end up paying for the wrong one.
The other Shipley blind spot is round the back. On terraced property with yard access, and on the estates with side gates and garages, the back door is usually the oldest lock on the plot and the quietest way in. A decent lock on the back door and a bolt on the gate is a small job with a very high return.

That's the multipoint gearbox wearing out, or the door having dropped slightly on its hinges. Get it looked at while the door still opens — that's a straightforward repair. Once it jams shut it becomes an emergency and costs more.
A mortice deadlock certified to BS3621 on the final exit door — it's stamped on the faceplate — and usually key-operated locks on accessible windows. A nightlatch on its own doesn't satisfy that wording, however solid it is.
