The doors round here
Calverley's old village centre is a conservation area, and it looks it — stone cottages, narrow frontages, and a lot of original timber doors that have been in place a very long time. On those, the right approach is conservative: a mortice deadlock cut properly into the door edge, a period-appropriate rim latch, a cylinder changed rather than a whole lockcase ripped out. And if you're locked out, picking the lock rather than drilling it matters a great deal more here than it does on a five-year-old composite door.
Farsley and Rodley are a different picture — much more post-war and modern estate housing, almost entirely re-doored in uPVC and composite. There it's multipoint gearboxes, euro cylinders and hinge adjustment, and replacing parts is straightforward.
Worth knowing if you're in the conservation area: changes to the external appearance of a building can be restricted, but fitting or changing a lock in an existing door isn't the kind of alteration that normally causes a problem. Replacing the whole door is a different conversation.
