Halifax's mill-town streets and the villages ringing them — Skircoat Green, Savile Park, Warley and Pellon — are a regular part of my round, just over the tops from Queensbury. Usually there within 20-30 minutes of your call.
The doors round here
Halifax is built on and into hillsides, which gives it a housing stock you don't get everywhere — long stone terraces stepped up the slope, and the local speciality of houses stacked over and under each other so that two front doors on different streets can belong to two different homes in the same block. It's worth knowing when you're describing where you are on the phone.
The doors themselves are mostly solid timber on the older stock, and a fair number still have their original ironmongery. That usually means a rim nightlatch on the face and, if you're lucky, a mortice deadlock underneath. If you've only got the nightlatch, that's the gap: nightlatches are convenience locks, not security locks, and most household policies ask for a five-lever deadlock to BS3621 on the final exit door.
Newer stock around Skircoat Green, Savile Park and the estate housing out towards Illingworth is more likely to be uPVC or composite, so it's multipoint gearboxes, euro cylinders and door alignment instead.
