Baildon doors and outbuildings
Baildon has a far higher proportion of detached and semi-detached property with land around it than most of my patch — garages, sheds, workshops, side gates, greenhouses, garden rooms. That changes the security picture completely. People spend money on the front door, which was already the strongest point on the plot, and leave a shed containing several thousand pounds of bikes and tools secured by a thin hasp and a padlock you could open with a screwdriver.
Side gates are the other blind spot, and the one I'd fix first. Once somebody is through the gate they're working out of sight of the street, at the back door and the outbuildings, with as much time as they want and nobody passing. A decent gate lock and a bolt changes that entirely, and it's one of the cheapest jobs I do.
The housing itself splits two ways. Around Baildon Green, Hope Hill and the older village core you get stone property with solid timber doors, rim nightlatches and mortice locks — the sort of door where a proper five-lever deadlock to BS3621 is both the right security answer and usually what your insurer is asking for. Out through Sandals, Charlestown and the post-war estates it's uPVC and composite on multipoint mechanisms, so it's gearboxes, euro cylinders and hinge adjustment.
Weather matters more here than most people expect. The moor-side streets are genuinely exposed, and both timber and composite doors move with damp and temperature. A door that was fine in August but catches in November usually hasn't got a broken lock — it's shifted a few millimetres relative to its keeps. That's an adjustment, not a new mechanism. Cheap padlocks on exposed gates and outbuildings also seize solid within a couple of winters up here, so it's worth buying something weather-rated the first time.
