The doors round here
Pudsey, Farsley and Stanningley had a huge wave of uPVC door replacement through the late nineties and two-thousands. Those doors are now fifteen to twenty-five years old, and the multipoint mechanism inside them — the strip of hooks, rollers and deadbolts running the height of the door — has a mechanical service life considerably shorter than the door itself.
The failure is gradual and gives plenty of warning. First the handle needs a firmer lift. Then it needs lifting twice. Then it only locks if you pull the door towards you at the same time. Then one day the gearbox strips and the door either won't lock at all or won't open. The last stage is the expensive one, because at that point it's an emergency and the door may need forcing.
Two things are worth separating out, because they get confused constantly. If the door won't lock, that's usually the mechanism or the alignment. If the key won't turn or the lock feels gritty, that's the cylinder. They're different parts, different prices, and a lot of people get sold the wrong one.
