The doors round here
Keighley grew fast in the nineteenth century and it shows in the housing — long runs of Victorian stone terraces through Ingrow, Fell Lane and the streets below the centre, most still with their original solid timber front doors. The typical setup is a rim nightlatch on the face of the door and not much else, and after a century of use those latches are often worn to the point where the key needs jiggling.
The bigger gap on this kind of terrace is round the back. Yards, ginnels and back gates give quiet access that nobody can see from the street, and the back door is often the older, weaker one. It is genuinely the cheapest security improvement available to most people here and almost nobody does it until something happens.
Riddlesden and Utley are a different mix — more inter-war and post-war semis, more uPVC and composite doors, so more multipoint mechanisms and euro cylinders.
